Nancy Cartwright was born in Kettering, Ohio on October 25, 1957. In 1978, She moved to Hollywood and studied with voice actor Daws Butler. Her first professional role was as Gloria in the animated series Ricky Ricón, followed by a leading role in the television film Marian Rose White (1982) and her first feature film, Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983).
Cartwright auditioned for a role in a series of animated shorts about a dysfunctional family to be aired during The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987, in her quest to work as a voice actress. Cartwright had planned to audition for the role of Lisa Simpson, the youngest daughter; however, when he arrived at the audition, he decided that the role of Bart, Lisa’s brother, was more appealing. Matt Groening, the show’s creator, let him audition for Bart’s voice in the same place. He did his voice for three weeks on The Tracey Ullman Show, and the shorts were turned into a half-hour show called The Simpsons in 1989. Cartwright won a Primetime Emmy Award for Best Voice Acting in 1992 and an Annie Award for Best Voice Acting in the Field of Animation in 1995 for his subsequent work as Bart.
